This is a photo essay for the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism’s Real Eyes Magazine.

Thanks to a $30 million budget deficit, Oakland Unified School District voted 6-1 to close the Roots International Academy, a small middle school in East Oakland at the end of the 2018-2019 school year. Following the decision, teachers in Oakland went on a week-long strike fighting for higher salary and fundings for public schools.
